Upper-Division General Education

Upper-Division General Education — 9 Units Minimum

General Requirements

Students must:

  1. Meet all prerequisites before enrollment in upper-division General Education courses. Minimally, all of these courses have a prerequisite of Oral Communication (A1), Written Communication (A2), Critical Thinking (A3), and Mathematics/Quantitative reasoning (B4). Academic departments may choose to include additional prerequisites.
  2. Complete the equivalent of at least one 3-unit course in each of the three domains of knowledge: Physical/Life Sciences (UD-B), Arts/Humanities (UD-C), and Social Sciences (UD-D).
  3. Complete at least 9 units of upper-division General Education coursework in residence at SF State.

Note: Although it will be possible to take upper-division General Education courses after the completion of A1, A2, A3, B4, and any other departmental prerequisites, in most cases, upper-division General Education courses are still designed and recommended to be taken after completing 60-semester units.

Students studying abroad through the CSU can petition to have appropriate courses taken abroad count for upper-division GE. These students should consult with the Study Abroad Office and with the Undergraduate Advising Center to get assistance in choosing appropriate classes to meet the required domains of knowledge and to complete the petition process upon their return.
