BIOL 161 Climate Change and the Oceans (Units: 3)

The world's oceans have absorbed roughly 90% of the Earth's excess heat from global warming and annually absorb one-third of fossil fuel produced CO2, which has a huge impact on the world's oceans that are so important as a global food resource. Examine the politics of climate change, and the ocean's effects on weather, commerce, and humanity.

Application of research justice and community-engaged research to CSL. Activities will include improving the well-being of communities by addressing biological and social determinants of health. These will be examined within the context of racial/ethnic health disparities caused by systemic racism and social disadvantage. Local health disparities will be addressed by honing skills and knowledge to meet the needs of communities of color through direct service, community organizing, and transcreation. Examination of ecological and evolutionary processes that govern the transmission of pathogens in animal and plant systems, including factors that lead to disease emergence, the impact of diseases on host populations, and theoretical foundations of disease ecology. Experience with developing a research question, formulating a testable hypothesis, biological data collection, quantitative analysis, and written and oral presentations through a group research project to assess ecology and risk of tick-borne diseases in the San Francisco Bay Area. Examine plant biodiversity through principles of classification, phylogenetic relationships, and global biogeography.
